Thank you to all this beautiful people who sent me their cuttings by mail or have helped me in some ways:
Ale!
Just wanted to tell you I've had great fun going down memory lane on your site...! Ah, those heady days of 1974! Thought I'd tell you (and maybe you can put out a request for stuff) that the writer Rosie Horide championed Queen right from the start and was pivotal in breaking the band - she wrote some great articles on the band for Record Mirror which I used to buy. In particular she covered the 1974 Rainbow gigs and the first tour of Japan. She basically 'got it' (the concept) right from the start. That woman deserved a medal! I also remember an article entitled 'Queen - Britain's Biggest Unknowns' from (I think) Melody Maker or Sounds, which I remember seeking out after the band had made a big impression on me with their debut Top of the Pops performance of 'Seven Seas...'. This was going on about how they were huge in Japan and I think it was from 1973...
'Popstar' was a glossy teen music magazine from the '70's that I bought before Record Mirror and Sounds/ Melody Maker. I used to have a book of small cuttings that I kept full of little editorial articles - mainly featuring Fred. I remember one where he's posing with a daffodil (colours were strange) and many others from this magazine. Other early articles were in Jackie (teenage girls magazine) and 'Hit' magazine - which was quite glossy and a strange format size (square). From this I remember Mick Rock's shoot with the sceptre being featured, which Brian claimed had never seen the light of day but the magazine printed it years ago in 1974... I believe Martin (Mr. Scully) got a load of Tony Brainsby press cuttings scrapbook things... I'm sure that the things I'm talking about are in there, so maybe you could ask him nicely (he's always been very kind to me)... :)
I used to have a massive collection of stuff right from 1973 (articles/press cuttings) which I lost but just wanted to tell you some of the stand out things I remember from those early days... I still have all the vinyl but lost all my fan club stuff from 1974... Really they should be archived online - I've not been a member for donkeys years - I don't know if they are online on the fan club website?
Anyway - just thought I'd tell you that your site is great and to keep going!
Best wishes,
Jane.
